“I really appreciate that Post cares about sustainability. It’s more than just their recycling program or energy-efficient appliances. It supports my lifestyle. It’s close to the Metro for work, and I can walk or bike almost anywhere else I need to go--like the Park across the street, or Whole Foods!”
Resident, Post Carlyle Square, Washington, DC
“One of the reasons I chose to live at Post South End is because of the LEED Silver certification. Not only do I support green initiatives, I also save a lot in utility costs because of the 5-Star appliances here.”
Resident, Post South End, Charlotte, NC

A Tradition of Sustainable Practices &
Green Initiatives for More than 30 Years!

At Post, we know how important it is to conserve our natural resources, and we share your commitment to being environmentally responsible. You might say we offered “green apartments” long before it became a widespread, and welcomed, trend.

We started simply in the late 1970s by reusing grass clippings instead of adding them to a landfill. The following decade, we began introducing recycling programs at our communities. Post extended our sustainability efforts in the 1990s with water-smart landscape design. As we evaluated our company operations, we identified environmentally friendly efficiencies throughout our portfolio.

Today, led by our “Green Team,” the Post Properties EcoActive™ initiative fosters a company culture committed to energy-saving behaviors and ecologically sound practices—including communities awarded or seeking "green" building certifications, such as our LEED Certified apartments.

Recycling/Waste Reduction

  • Recycling centers are available at all Post communities, where our residents are encouraged to recycle newspapers, glass, aluminum and plastic. We also participate in a similar recycling initiative at our corporate office.

  • Post apartments’ green initiatives include installing recyclable carpet, which our vendor collects upon replacement, rather than sending it to a landfill.

  • Our stationery and most of our marketing materials are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper that is either mixed-source or 100% recycled.

  • We recycle many of the items used in our building maintenance operations, such as fluorescent bulbs and batteries.

  • Post introduced sustainable landscape practices in 1993, including xeriscaping, a “water smart” landscape design, which enables us to use less irrigation.

  • Low volume irrigation is used for our landscaping wherever possible to reduce water consumption.

  • All new developments have smart irrigation controllers that deliver water based on the needs of the plants through on-site weather stations or soil moisture sensors.

  • Our landscape contractors remove all green waste from our communities and recycle the organic material.

  • As an industry leader in landscape design, we create and advocate for green space, and many of our new communities incorporate green roofs into their designs.

  • We use organic fertilizers and pesticides on our many flowerbeds.

Energy Conservation

  • As part of Post apartments’ green initiatives we conduct routine energy audits of each community, including semi-annual preventive maintenance inspections for every apartment, monitoring year-over-year energy consumption, and tracking utilities in vacant apartments, enable us to maintain the highest efficiency standards.

  • We use low-flow faucets, showerheads and toilets at most of our communities.

  • Energy-efficient appliances and high-efficiency heating and air conditioning equipment lower energy costs for our residents.

  • By sub-metering individual consumption of water at most of our communities, we encourage better water conservation habits from our residents.

  • Photocells control the operating hours of lighting in outdoor common areas, where fluorescent bulbs are predominantly used for their energy efficiency.

Green Operations

  • As part of our in-house Green Cleaning program, we purchase green cleaning products in concentrated form, allowing us to reuse bottles rather than send them to landfills.

  • Post Properties’ sustainability practices also dictate we use recycled paper products, along with environmentally friendly trash bags.

  • We use green pest control products derived from natural plant oils when applying inside a resident’s living space.

  • When possible our vendors use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Principles. This method relies on a combination of common-sense practices to create a series of pest management evaluations, decisions and controls with an emphasis on non-chemical controls when available to prevent pest infestations before they start.

  • Our residents can utilize Post’s Resident Portal or mobile app to conduct paperless transactions for rent payments, maintenance requests and property announcements.

Construction Practices

  • Our projects are typically located in mixed-use communities or neighborhoods providing our residents nearby amenities, proximity to work and alternative means of transportation which reduce car trips.

  • Where possible, we buy from local suppliers and manufacturers, thereby reducing delivery distances and saving energy.

  • We build following the guidelines of the United States Green Building Council and National Multi Housing Council Green Building Standards.

  • As part of our sustainable apartment goals, recycled and readily renewable resources are often used in our finishes to reduce the depletion of our natural resources.

  • Reflective roofs are used to reduce heat gain and build-up in our urban core.

  • Construction waste is recycled in cooperating jurisdictions to reduce materials sent to landfills.
